Overview

Beat It! Treatment Literacy Series
The series is taken from the 21-part TV magazine programme Beat It! Your Guide to Better Living with HIV/AIDS, broadcast by eTV in 1999-2000. Together with the many inserts produced for the series we have included material from the Treatment Literacy workshops presented by the Treatment Action Group of New York and the Treatment Action Campaign. The result is a unique training resource, which combines personal documentary accounts of living with HIV/AIDS and expert advice and explanation. The material is presented simply with all the key points reinforced with text. Sipho Paddy Nhlapo - himself living with HIV - presents the videos. Sipho was a presenter on Beat It! and has been working for the National Association of People Living with AIDS in the North West Province for the past two years.

Treatment and Prevention - two sides of the same coin
Effective treatment encourages people to come forward for testing. The more people test and receive treatment, the greater the willingness to take responsibility and practice safer sex. Prevention without treatment has had a limited effect. The Beat It! HIV/AIDS Treatment Literacy Series provides much of the basic information you require to respond to the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS - in your workplace, organization, community and in your family.

Treatment Literacy
How much do you know about living with HIV? How equipped are you to respond to the needs of friends, colleagues and even family members when they are diagnosed as having HIV? Most of us know that HIV is passed on mostly through sex and from a mother to her child during birth. But what is HIV? Once it is inside your body what does it do? What is the immune system and how does HIV destroy it? What are the most common diseases that effect HIV positive people and how should they be treated? What do HIV positive people need to know about nutrition, vitamin supplementation, and sex? Very importantly, what do the laws of South Africa say about discrimination and the rights of positive people? The Beat It! Treatment Literacy Series provides an introduction to all of these topics, giving you the core information you will need to respond creatively to people living with HIV/AIDS in your environment. This comprehensive series is designed to inform discussions and workshops around the many issues covered. Its approach is simple, and emphasizes that training employees, colleagues, community need not be an expensive, complicated nor time-consuming exercise.
